Introduction

The City Of Tribes is the place for your group experience or holiday if you’re keen on lively nightlife, trad music, seafood and no shortage of culture. It’s also known as the festival capital of Ireland, so you’re sure to run into some exciting events, no matter what time of year you’re planning your visit. Local suppliers are also seriously switched on when it comes to offering fun activities, quality accommodation and quality food, so it’s the perfect place for a group getaway.

5 Top reasons to visit Galway

  1. To stand under the famous Spanish Arches.
  2. The traditional music scene is vibrant in Galway, so there are plenty of pubs to hear some beautiful Irish music.
  3. Connemara is just on your doorstep, so you can’t visit the City Of Tribes without heading out into that famous countryside.
  4. If you’re a fan of seafood, then Galway is the place to be in Ireland. We highly recommend the Galway Oyster Festival in September!
  5. Base yourself in Galway to explore the beauties of the Wild Atlantic Way.

4 Top group activities & ideas in Galway

  1. As the foodie capital of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, you can’t pass up the opportunity to book your group in for a meal in one of Galway’s incredible restaurants or pubs.
  2. A Party River Cruise lets you see Galway City from a totally different perspective. Get your group out on the water for some tunes and dancing.
  3. If you like the idea of a few drinks but want to stay on land, then book your group for a Pedal Pub Crawl! There are no drinks on the vehicle but you’ll be taken on a quality tour of some of Galway’s best pubs and you’ll get there in unique style.
  4. Get out on the water to see Galway’s stunning coastline with a bit of ocean kayaking or surfing.

Where to drink in Galway

  • An Pucan, Forster Street: Considered one of the best pubs in Galway, An Pucan is a great choice if you’re keen on a busy atmosphere, a trendy beer garden and live music on the weekends. It’s also open very late compared to some of the sleepier pubs in town.
  • Tigh Neachtain, corner Cross Street and Quays Street: Located down in the Latin Quarter, Neachtain’s is more of a cosy fire and quiet pint pub if your group are looking for somewhere laid back and full of locals.
  • The Crane Bar, Sea Road: If your group are looking for a proper Irish trad music session in a local Galway pub, then The Crane Bar is the place to go! Head inside for a proper pint and then upstairs to take in the tunes.

Getting to & around Galway

Galway can be easily reached by train (via Irish Rail) and bus (via Bus Eireann). If you’re flying in, then you can choose Shannon Airport or Knock Airport, which are both a 1 hour drive from the city. Galway City is a very walkable destination, so we don’t think you’ll need to spend too much money on transport for your daily site-seeing. It’s only if you’re planning on doing a group activity outside of town or you’re off to see Connemara or the Aran Islands that you’ll need to consider driving or hiring transport.

The best things to see or do for groups in Galway

  1. Find a great pub in the Latin Quarter: With some of the best pubs and bars in town and almost guaranteeing the sounds of trad music wafting down the street, the Latin Quarter is the place to go for your group night out in Galway city.
  2. Spanish arches: This 16th century structure is located down by the water in Galway city, looking out over the Atlantic Ocean and framing a perfect view. It’s a great photo opportunity for your group’s trip to Galway!
  3. Galway City Museum: If your group are into their history, then you can’t pass up a free visit to Galway’s popular museum. Covering the city’s ancient history and more modern developments, there is something for every period.
  4. Aran Islands: Jump on a ferry and head out to these wild Atlantic islands where an older way of life still rules, Irish Gaelic is the first language and the pubs are first class.
  5. Connemara: Whether you drive out there yourself or take a tour, the beautiful wilds of Connemara are not to be missed. Its rugged rolling hills and spectacular coastlines have attracted visitors for decades and trust us when we say you’ll regret skipping this part of Galway if you’re in the area.
  6. Galway food tour: Galway is famous for its oysters but the locals are connoisseurs of all things food. One of our favourite things to do in the city is a walking tour with food samples along the way.
  7. Festivals galore: Galway is also famous for its many festivals throughout the year. Whether it’s food, music or culture you’re looking for, Galway has a festival for you.

When is the best time to travel to Galway?

If you’d like to visit Galway when it’s a little quieter, then we recommend avoiding big events like TedFest (March), Paddy’s Day, Galway Food Festival (April), Trad On The Prom (May) or the Christmas Markets in December.

Is Galway expensive?

Accommodation in Galway can be a bit expensive but there are a variety of options to help you keep your group experience or trip in budget. When it comes to activities and bars, it’s actually a very affordable city!

Do we need to pay a deposit to book?

No! You don’t pay anything upfront when you submit your booking request through our website and there’s no commitment. We’ll check availability for your chosen item(s) and, only once we’ve confirmed everything, we’ll ask you to pay for your spot on the event/trip (the full cost of one person) as the non-refundable deposit to secure the booking.
